1. Studies of English Textbook Evaluation
1.1 Studies Abroad
The evaluation of English textbooks abroad started relatively early and achieved rich results. Numerous scholars had come up with many significant textbook evaluation frameworks, and given detailed evaluation levels and corresponding comparison standards, which were of great value.
Foreign research on English textbooks had three characteristics. First of all, as the study object, English textbooks were mainly to compiled to teach as a second language. In the second place, the studies on the content of textbooks were mainly from the perspective of applied linguistics, that is, language learning separated from school education, ignoring the specific national conditions of English as a foreign language and the complex relationship between English and other subjects in school education. In the third place, the researcherrsquo;s stance was critical, focusing on the analysis of various possible prejudices such as race, gender and class in the textbook.
1.2 Studies at Home
After reviewing the existing studies on English textbooks evaluation in China, it could be found that most of the studies were the interpretation, explanation or recommendation of the current textbooks. According to the contents and categories involved, the classification system of Wang (2008) was applied here for reference. The types of studies on English textbooks evaluation include: 1) the guiding ideology and instructions of textbooks, 2) the research on textbooks and teaching methods, and 3) the evaluation and comparison standards of textbooks. Some representative works were presented as follows.
1.2.1 The compiling principle, guide ideology and instructions of textbooks
There were two categories. One was to explain the principles and guiding ideology that should be observed in the textbooks according to the discipline characteristics, student groups and social needs, which mainly targets the compilers of textbooks, including some experts and scholars. The other is the elaboration of textbooks made by the editors, aiming to the actual users of the textbook, especially English teachers.
